What Length Hair Cutting Scissor Should I Choose

December 12, 2022

It's that time again! You're thinking of buying a new pair of hairdressing scissors. We know you have a few pairs of hairdressing scissors, but really what stylist doesn't want more scissors! If you're a creature of habit and usually stick to a 5.5 inch scissor, let us help you venture out of your comfort zone! It's time to switch it up a bit ! And add some different lengths to your tool kit!

Smaller sized scissors

Small scissors aren't just for small hands! You may just find that these shorties are perfect for you.

Short scissors range in size from 4 inches- 5 inches. They are great for a few different hair cutting techniques.

If you're a fan of the small details you may want to consider some smaller hair cutting scissors. They are great for point cutting. If you're a hairdresser who does a lot of pixie cuts, these may be the right hairdressing scissors for you! If you like adding little texture around the ear, or neck line, a short scissor blade will help you achieve this look.

Using smaller scissors for all cutting techniques may not be the best thing for you. You may find blunt cutting with a pair of smaller scissors to be more difficult. Constantly opening and closing your scissors can cause hand fatigue, and make it harder to achieve that perfect straight line cutting.

If you're looking for a great pair of smaller scissors maybe try looking at our Jaguar Pre Style Ergohere. These are a great scissor for everyone! They come in size from 4.5 inches to 6 inches.

Medium/ Regular Sized hair scissors

Most people will learn to cut hair using a 5.5 inch scissor or 6 inch. This becomes their most trusted scissor. Regular Sized scissors are a great all rounder. They can be used for any and all hairdressing techniques. You will find that most thinning scissors and texturising scissors also come in regular size.

There may not seem to be a huge difference between the 5.5 in and the 6 inch pair of scissors. However, every stylist is different, and it is best to find which is more comfortable for your hand. To find your ideal size hair scissor, place your scissors in the palm of your hand. Place the finger hole at the base of your thumb. The tip of the blade should be in the last section of your middle finger. This should help you decide between the 5.5 inch and 6 inch scissor.

Regular sized professional hairdressing scissors are the perfect length for slide cutting and slice cutting. These techniques require a good amount of control and comfort. A larger scissor may be too heavy to glide smoothly through the hair.

If you're looking for a great all rounder, in either 5.5 inch or 6 inch, we recommend checking out our Precision rangehere. These scissors are made from Hitachi 440C Japanese steel. They are lightweight and can be used for a variety of haircutting techniques.

Longer scissors

Longer hair cutting scissors range in size from 6inch-8inch. They are also commonly known as barber scissors. This is because barbers usually prefer to use a longer scissor for their scissor over comb technique. Having a longer scissor means you can take larger sections.

That being said, long scissors are no longer just for barbering techniques! They can be used as long hair scissors too. Longer blades are great for blunt cutting techniques. The less times you have to open and close your shears the more precise your lines will be. When you open and close your scissors the hair can occasionally slide off the narrow tip. If you have longer scissors, less chance of the hair sliding. This will definitely come in handy when cutting bobs. Longer scissors not only help keep those blunt lines completely straight but are great for cutting against the skin. You may also find a lot of barber shears are micro serrated scissors. This means they have tiny little cuts in one blade. These little cuts help to insure the hair stays in one place. They are amazing for blunt cuts. However we do not recommend serrated scissors for most other texturising techniques, as they can pull hair when trying to slide or slice.

If you're looking to add a long scissor to your hair cutting repertoire may we introduce you to our Matsui Precision Barber Scissor. Check this beauty outHERE. These barber shears are made for cutting the straightest of lines and getting the perfect scissor over comb every time!
