The autumn/winter fashion shows have wound up giving us all a look at the hairstyles that will trend into 2024. We've seen many of them throughout this eventful start to the year to say the least, and we have much more to look forward to as the year heads past Spring and into summer. Here’s what your clients will be asking for as the weather warms up.
Men’s hairstyles are enjoying a variety of options. What's trending for men's hair is what seems to be a wide number of hairstyles, from fresh twists on the classic short-back-and-sides to variations on the perennial man bun – for men, we're seeing a new take on a lot of past trending hairstyles.
In 2020, the traditional short back and sides are truly supplemented with some fresh, new ideas. The current version – the faded cut – will continue to be popular, and the length remains optional, from very short to a longer length.
The “Man Bun” is a continuing trend in 2020. A staple of younger men in urban areas, it won’t change much from being shaved on the sides and long hair tied on the top.
Guys with straight or wavy hair will continue to need wax as it’s the perfect product to use on a daily basis. It makes hair look effortlessly styled with a medium hold and the lowest shine of all hair products.
Another benefit comes from the heaps of texture it adds to all types of hair. It’s good for a “messy look” that actually doesn’t look messy at all.
Pomades are hair wax’s classic cousin. They combine a lot of hold with a lot of shine, and are the best product to use for a slicked back, smooth hairstyle.
If your client loves the slick, smooth look, they’ll want to use pomade. The shiny finish and superior hold of pomades are what really separates them from hair waxes.
If your client has curly hair, they’ll need a styling cream. Because it’s a thicker liquid, it offers a light shine with no hold at all, and takes care of the frizz and of curly hair
All Natural
If you’ve got clients who don’t have much time to devote to their hair, they’ll be happy this season! Hair in its natural state will be big in 2020, which will require a cut that suits your client’s hair type and face. It’s time for that frank conversation with your client. Find out how much time they have to do their hair, what products they’re happy to use and their lifestyle. The goal of this trend is to give your client great-looking hair with less effort by enhancing what they’ve already got.
Long, Shiny and Sleek
Long, shiny, glossy and sleek hair is beautiful and on-trend in 2020. You’ll need a client who is prepared to put some work into achieving this style. This style is long, one-length, and blunt. It was all over last year's Spring Fashion Week too. Your client will need to work a heavy dose of styling cream from the roots to mid-lengths to get that unmistakable shine with a little bit of hold.
This suits square-shaped faces because of the length and because the layers are kept long and below the chin. The length and layers lean out the face and camouflage severe angles. This cut also requires some good density and body for support.
Make sure that you remind your client to trim ends regularly- this style won’t treat dry, split ends favourably.
Bold Chops
For clients who want to try a bold new look, short, blunt bobs will trend into summer and 2020. There’s a variety to choose from, from a classic wedge to an undercut, buzzed hair, short bobs, and a bold fringe.
Your client might ask for a blunt bob that's below the chin and jawline, but above the shoulders with a very clean, blunt finish. For the most flattering finish, the angle of the bob should be similar to the angle of your client’s jawline and the length will depend on your client’s face shape.
The bob is recommended for someone with round cheeks and high cheekbones. It also works well on oval, long, and round face shapes since it helps to strengthen the jawline.
In 2020, the trend for the bob is blunt and sharp and the more angular, the better.
A Fringe
Your client may ask for a short, tapered fringe, cut dry with straight scissors — not thinning shears.
Everyone seems to be gravitating towards a fringe on the shorter side, which delivers enviable volume and body. A fringe works on any hair texture — even waves and curls! If you’re client’s got wavy or curly hair, suggest a mixture of short and long pieces in their fringe.
This style works well on round faces, especially if you make sure to leave the fringe a little longer. It also works well on diamond, oval and square face shapes and for those with particularly thick hair.
Hey Shaggy
The shag has been huge, and it seems like it’s still going to popular going into summer. Perhaps it’s because it’s such an easy and versatile cut. It works on straight or wavy hair, long and short. The trick to making this cutwork is to create soft lines with your scissors by point-cutting.
Throughout 2020, the prediction is that the shag will go longer. With hair that hits just past the shoulders and a fringe that is long enough to be split down the middle, the grown-out shag is the haircut to keep an eye on as 2020 progresses.
Colours to Try
Following trends set by stars like Katy Perry and Cara Delevingne, your client may wish to try platinum blonde. Other colour trends that popped up on the catwalk at Fashion Week, trends for 2020 and 2021, are highly pigmented, brightly coloured hair. From canary yellow to electric blue and even fluorescent pink, you may see more requests for this bold new look.
For clients who aren’t after such a bold look, the predictions for brunettes and blondes are warm colour.
Brunettes will look for a warm red tone. It’s these touches of darker reds that will warm up browns with a ruby-coloured glow.
The blonde of summer 2020 is a warm, lived-in, low-maintenance one. Think blonde hair with darker roots and hints of chocolate brown and caramel throughout which require minimal touchups. It’s rich and warm without being brassy.
